Well, here I am, a freshly-minted member of deviantArt. Why, you ask? To be honest, it's primarily so that I can organize my favorite artists. I've always had an interest in creating art, but the standard refrain was "I wish I could draw". I have this spacial concept deficit that makes my pen-and-paper sketches look pretty weird. I also have a slight addiction to the Yuri/Shoujo genre of manga and Visual Novels (aka Eroge). As writing fiction is my actual job, there has been many a time I have had this conversation with myself:
Me: "Ooooh, this plot would go great in a manga!"
Self-Censor: "You can't draw, dingbat."
Me: "What a waste. I wish I could draw."
Self-Censor: "Get back to work."
Enter Photoshop. I design my own book covers and am married to a photographer, so I have a more-than-passing understanding of this program. I never considered that I could create actual "art" with it; I'm still not sure what I'm doing is even considered art, but that is a debate for another day. I had this plot that kept popping up so one day (mostly because I was bored with the umpteenth revision of my latest novel) I said "What the hay, let's cobble together some bits from existing manga and make a doujinshi for fun."
I'd planned on staying in black and white, figuring color was far beyond my capabilities. Then I used a color model from one of my eroge and suddenly I was creating my own characters in full color. Mind you, I am very, very new at this so what is great to me is not exactly publication-worthy. I kept finding deviantArt popping up in searches, and found the awesome resources other deviants have made available, and I was hooked.
So, here I am, a humble artist playing in the (very) shallow end of the pool. I therefore bow and say, Please take care of me.
